Description
From the Blue Oaks Boulevard Bridge over Kaseberg Creek, I saw a pair of coyotes (Canis latrans) in Roseville, California. They looked very healthy and I managed to get a few cell phone photos as they sauntered under the bridge to follow the creek. They were wary and kept their distance. My dog, Mochi, just watched the pair silently. Coyotes are not uncommon in Roseville. I see coyotes about 4 or 5 times a year on my daily walks. I see wild turkeys almost every day. I always wonder if those coyotes are ever successful hunting the turkeys because I know the turkeys are alert and they can fly.
In western states in the United States, typical adult males Coyotes weigh from 25 to 45 pounds (11 to 16 kg). They have good eyesight, hearing and a keen sense of smell. Coyotes have been measured at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour (64 km/hr) and can sustain slower speeds for several miles. In North America, Coyotes live in deserts, swamps, tundra, grasslands, brush, dense forests, from below sea level to high mountain ranges, and at all intermediate altitudes. High densities of coyotes also appear in the suburbs of Los Angeles, Pasadena, Phoenix, and other western cities.
This 11” X 15” watercolor was done on Arches, 300 lb, rough paper.
