Description
In the very unlikely event this trail walker sees a 6” tarantula, it could be the Johnny Cash Tarantula. To the right of the Johnny Cash Trail and over the hillside is Folsom Prison. Folsom State Prison is the second oldest prison in California, where it has housed inmates since 1880. Its famous East Gates are instantly recognizable from their numerous appearances on screen and film. In 1968, Cash famously recorded an album, Live at Folsom Prison, in a prison performance for inmates and guards. Folsom Prison Blues, was one of the singer-songwriter’s first chart toppers, and helped launch his country music career. For most visitors to Folsom Prison, which has a small public museum, the biggest draw is the connection between the prison and the legendary musician. . Another album and hit by Cash was Man In Black. The arachnologist who discovered the tarantula species, Aphonopelma johnnycashi, in 2015 in Ione, California, noticed the male tarantula is dressed in black while the female is a dark brown. Hamilton named the spider in honor of the Man In Black in 2016.
The City of Folsom celebrated the completion of the Johnny Cash Trail on October 14, 2017. It is bike and pedestrian trail that winds west toward the Folsom Historic District and east toward the Folsom Lake Crossing Trail. The trail has two beautiful bridges inspired by the local landscape including the architecture found at nearby Folsom State Prison.
This 11” X 15” watercolor was done on Fabriano Aristico, 140 lb, rough paper.
