Description
I painted the Rio Vista Bridge with a combination of acrylic ink and watercolor. The ink doesn't always play nice with the textured paper surface and with watercolor, blending can be a challenge. Working with watercolor paint alone is easier for me. However ink can increase the color intensity and has a different character about it.
The bridge is 44 miles south of Sacramento, about an hour's drive. The center section lifts for tall ships. I found out that when it does lift, you could be stuck in Rio Vista traffic for a half hour. This bridge is just south of the historic town of Locke where I painted the Boarding House Museum.
The Helen Madere Memorial Bridge, commonly called by its former name, the Rio Vista Bridge after its location, is a vertical-lift bridge which carries California State Route 12 across the Sacramento River at Rio Vista, California. The present bridge was completed in 1960 and is one of several moveable bridges spanning rivers in the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. As of 2013 the bridge carries approximately 21,000 cars per day.
The Rio Vista Lift Bridge is one of six remaining lift bridges in the state of California. Five of these, including Rio Vista, are of historic age.The Rio Vista Lift Bridge is also the second longest lift bridge in the state, and has similar horizontal and vertical clearances to the longest lift bridge in the state, the Schuyler Heim Lift Bridge in Long Beach. The Rio Vista Lift Bridge measures 2,890 feet, the vertical clearance is 135 feet, and the horizontal clearance in the channel is 270 feet.
