Description
The Rocklin Fine Arts made an urban sketching trek to the Crocker Museum. The complex is combination of the original 1872 mansion on the east side at 3rd and O streets and a modern three story structure to the west in Sacramento, California. I took photos of picturesque mansion exterior and Palms to paint later at home. Inside the museum we were only allowed to use a pencil and paper. Watercolor is definitely out.
Judge Edwin B. Crocker, was appointed Associate Justice for the Supreme Court for the state of California in 1862. After retirement, he commissioned local architect Seth Babson to renovate the home into a grander, Italianate mansion that was completed in 1872. In addition, Crocker asked Babson to design an elaborate gallery building adjacent to the mansion to display the family's growing art collection. E. B. Crocker Art Gallery, founded in 1885 by his widow, Margaret Crocker, is the oldest art museum west of the Mississippi River. Located in Sacramento, California, the family mansion went through several uses and reconstructions until a 1989 renovation restored the historic façade and created a modern gallery interior. The buildings were renamed the Crocker Art Museum in 1978. On October 10, 2010 the Crocker Art Museum opened a new 125,000-square-foot building designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects. The new building, named the Teel Family Pavilion, is attached to the museum's historic structures.
This 11” X 17” watercolor was done on Arches, 400 lb, rough paper.
