Description
I attended the 2023 annual meeting of the Georgia Watercolor Society (GWA) in Blue Ridge, Georgia, From Bogart, it was a stormy 2 ½ hour drive which kept a few folks from attending. The meeting was engaging and it was the first time I saw the GWA in action. The main event for me was their juried show and award presentation at the historic Fannin County Courthouse, built in 1937. The renovated Courthouse is the home of the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association's Arts Center. Blue Ridge was recognized by Southern Living Magazine as one of the South’s Best Mountain Towns in 2022. This quaint little town reminds me of the tourist towns in the Sierra foothills of California. As the home of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, the historic railroad depot remains the central focus in downtown Blue Ridge.
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway offers a four-hour 26 mile round trip railway excursion along the beautiful Toccoa River, from Blue Ridge to McCaysville, Georgia, sister city to Copperhill, Tennessee. During a two-hour layover, passengers can enjoy lunch and take a walk across the "Blue Line" on the street and be in Tennessee. You can actually stand in two states at once if you have one foot on the Georgia side and the other on the Tennessee side! The train runs from March through December. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is quite popular in the fall for experiencing the area’s beautiful fall colors. However, even on a rainy day in April, families and friends were out enjoying the nostalgic beauty of the train and comfy town feel.
This 11” X 15” watercolor was done on Winsor & Newton, 140 lb., rough paper.

Thanks William. I was on the upper floor of a hotel across the street. Leaned out the window to get a good reference shot to paint later.
