Description
Observation of a boy and his tree house was the most intriguing thing I saw at the Harrison Farms in Woodland, California. It was a summer outing in 2020 by the Yolo Art-Ag group with most of the artists and photographers focusing on the abundant sunflowers. For me the tree house churned up a whole series of thoughts instantly. First was the engineering involved in that well-crafted tree house which was structurally sound and beyond what is typical for a kid’s tree house. Secondly, it would require the assistance of an adult to build for the placement of large pieces. That tree house was a sign of good parenting.
As I watched the boy go up the ladder with tools to fnish the final details of the tree house by himself, he was demonstrating self-motivation, physical effort, work ethic, and determination. The project involved long range planning and design. He learned to work as a team with his parents and that great things are created when you work together and also unifying family ties. The kid learned to use tools and developed carpentry skills which will serve him for the rest of his life. When he is done, he will have self-confidence, pride, and ready to tackle more difficult projects in the future. I don’t know him but I do know he will go far and he has great parents. We need more tree houses.
This 15” X 22” watercolor was done on Arches, 140 lb, rough paper.
