Description
On my morning dog walk, I saw a Turkey strutting next to Fire Station 9 in Roseville, California. Male wild turkeys mate by strutting, displaying their tail feathers and gobbling to attract females. Wildlife biologist, Bob Eriksen, explains the science behind the strut. “Strutting is an instinctive or innate behavior. The word is used to describe the courtship display of the wild turkey.” Folks generally associate strutting with the mating season, but the same display has other meanings in different situations. “Outside of the breeding season, strutting is often used as a show of dominance when performed in the presence of other males. Optimistic gobblers also may perform the display in the presence of hens outside the breeding season in the vain hope of stimulating a breeding session.” Hens also are capable of strutting and will do so to show dominance or, occasionally, in response to a predator threatening a brood.
In November of 2020, there was an article in a regional newspaper, The Sacramento Bee, about an aggressive turkey in Roseville. An “aggressive agitator” was breaking into homes and chasing people in California — and it was an unusual suspect. “They eventually made contact with the suspect, later identified as Miss Turkey,” the Roseville Police Department said on Facebook. Miss Turkey was so aggressive that one person couldn’t leave their home for work, Officials tracked down the turkey and captured it. “They decided the best course of action was to temporarily detain Miss Turkey and relocate her to a more wooded area near another flock. This is not our normal response for turkey calls but we’re happy to report no residents (or turkeys) were injured during this incident.”
This 11” X 15” watercolor was done on Arches, 140 lb, cold press paper.
