Description
This is my painting is of Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, near Gridley, California. This view is from a parking spot on the visitor’s loop road. There were thousands of migrating birds and it reminded me of the Chinese traditional embroidery of 100 birds. I wondered if I could paint 100 birds in a single painting. When I got done with the painting I counted all the birds and white spots of birds in the distance and it went over 200 so I succeeded.
“A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix” is a traditional Chinese painting. In Chinese legend, the phoenix was originally an inconspicuous bird with a plain appearance. Unlike most birds that busied themselves with playing around, he collected fruit and seeds in his den from dawn to dust. Unable to understand his behavior, other birds mocked him for being greedy. Later, an unexpected drought left many birds without anything to eat. The phoenix opened his den, and shared his food with the other birds, saving their lives. When the rain finally returned, bringing life back to the forest, the birds wanted to show their gratitude to the phoenix. Each bird pulled out one of their most beautiful feathers, and together they made the feathers into a dazzling garment. They presented the garment to the phoenix, and crowned him as their king.
This 15” X 22” watercolor painting was done on Winsor & Newton, 140 lb, rough paper.
