Description
This is a watercolor of a girl hugging her chicken at the Enchanted Forest~Exotic Animal Sanctuary at 605 Quartz Mine Road in Newcastle, California. The Sanctuary is often open to the public on weekends, kids are welcome. Visitors are encouraged to bring romaine lettus to feed the animals but the ostriches only get spinach. 14 years ago the Sanctuary was started to rescue tortoises. Other animals besides tortoises were brought for various reasons; abandoned, owner’s death, and unfortunate circumstances. An example of an unfortunate circumstance is in recent times a farm burned down due the California wild fires and they proided sanctuary for the cows, sheep, and geese from that farm.
I sat on a picnic bench to get a photo of a box turtle on the ground when a girl sat down next to me to give her chicken a big hug. I took a few quick snapshots for reference painting photo because it was more picturesque than the turtle. Being the curious type that I am, I looked up chicken hugging. It is something CDC is not happy about. However to my amazement there is a day dedicated to chicken hugging. “During the entire day on November 5th, Hug a Chicken Day™, people across the globe will be hugging and posting their pictures to this Facebook event. On this day, please take the time to honor your chickens for all that they provide to your family and the world”
This 12” X 16” watercolor was done on Arches, 140 lb, cold press paper.

Thank you Carlin for selecting that piece. That's Chloe the daughter of the owner of the Enchanted Forest Animal Sanctuary in Colfax, California. I visited the sanctuary, sat on picnic bench for a moment, and Chloe sat next to me with her favorite chicken. The chicken loved the hug as much as Chloe.
