Description
This is my watercolor painting of Wayne Hopkins, a Roseville photographer that I shared my space with for the annual Placer Arts Studio Tour. After talking with him about his photographs on display I discovered how much time and effort is really put into his art. What looks to be a simple photograph might actually be a composite of a dozen photographs and has taken days to process. One of his steampunk themed photographs was multiple photos that were manipulated into an imagined reality. What looks like a single photograph of a real scene, isn’t real but looks great.
Some of Wayne’s favorite subjects are trains and steampunk. In a style similar to Wayne I created an imagined scene of Wayne photographing himself in a steampunk outfit in front of his favorite train and of course he always wears a hat. The train in the background is Big Boy, Union Pacific 4014, is one of the largest steam locomotives in the world. The railroad's Steam Team has just completed a full restoration as part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 2019. Wayne intends to photograph that train if it comes out near our area.
Part of Wayne’s description of himself from the Arts Council of Placer County art directory: “Photography for me is a matter of capturing emotion, drama, interesting ideas and visually stimulating images. If a viewer is struck by one of my images, I’ve accomplished my goal. Strikingly handsome, yet mild mannered Urban Cowboy! Diminutive in stature but big on imagination and heart.”
This 15” X 22” watercolor painting was done on Blick, 140 lb, cold press paper.
