Description
My watercolor and casein painting of landscape scenery near Esparto, California. On a Yolo Art-Ag sponsored outing we visited the Ronchetto Ranch off of County Road 25 in Yolo County. It is a 70-acre cattle ranch nestled up against rolling hills. A view from the edge of the property looks over Capay Valley and in another direction is “Blue Ridge.” The name Capay comes from the Southern Wintun Indian word for "stream". Capay Valley is a mostly rural valley northwest of Sacramento.
I gave the painting the title Esparto Hills and later discovered it might be called Blue Ridge by the locals. Coincidentally that’s where the casein paint is, the blue in the sky and ridge. The watercolor paper had damaged or faulty sizing and when the watercolor paint touched the paper in the sky area it soaked in like a blotter and random dark spots appeared. The Arches watermarked also appear in dark letters in the sky. I figured casein paint can be used opaquely and used that to fix the sky problem. I let some thin blue washes come down the hills to give it distance and atmosphere. It’s good to have more than one tool in your toolbox when things go wrong.
This 11” X 15” watercolor and casein painting was done on Arches, 300 lb, cold press paper.
