Description
This was an unplanned painting. At the Auburn Michael’s open studio we were discussing student grade watercolor paper. Somebody gave me a piece of watercolor paper to try. At home I decided to paint chickens to test the paper. I used a reference photo of chickens taken at Jill Jensen’s farm in Wheatland. Looking at how the watercolor reacted on the paper, I saw in some places the paint settled into little depressions in the paper and looked like tiny feathers. I thought that looked good and decided to call this paper test a painting.
This not a recommendation for this particular paper. Student grade paper is cheap for a reason, the material is usually based on wood pulp instead of 100% cotton and typically cannot handle rough techniques or corrections. It can be more difficult to paint on student grade paper than artist grade paper and the results won’t be the same.
The 9” X 12” watercolor painting was done on Bienfang, 140 lb, cold press paper.
