My watercolor and casein painting of landscape scenery near Esparto, California. On a Yolo Art-Ag sponsored outing we visited the Ronchetto Ranch off of County Road 25 in Yolo County. It is a 70-acre cattle ranch nestled up against rolling hills. A view from the edge of the property looks over Capay Valley and in another direction is “Blue Ridge.” The name Capay comes from the Southern Wintun Indian word for "stream". Capay Valley is a mostly rural valley northwest of Sacramento.
I gave the painting the title Esparto Hills and later discovered it might be called Blue Ridge by the locals. Coincidentally that’s where the casein paint is, the blue in the sky and ridge. The watercolor paper had damaged or faulty sizing and when the watercolor paint touched the paper in the sky area it soaked in like a blotter and random dark spots appeared. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
