Description
I saw the Southern White Rhinoceros at the Atlanta Zoo back in November, 2023. Next month, on Christmas Eve, the Atlanta Zoo had first white rhino birth ever. Kiazi is the mom, and the father is Mumbles. There is also a female adult rhino that came to the zoo in October named Dakari. The “white” aspect of the species name is from an Afrikaans word “wyde” meaning “wide” and has nothing to do with the color white. Wyde references the animals’ mouth shape but was misinterpreted by early English settlers as “white.” I’m not sure which of those three adult rhinos I painted but it was looking straight at me, so that the big horn hid the second smaller horn. I’m sure if that impressive 3,500 pound plus rhino were to charge me in the wild, I would get both horns and stomped on. I had to pay to get in zoo but fortunately seeing the rhinos was free of charge.
This 12” X 16” watercolor is on Arches, 300 lb., cold press paper.
