Description
This is the opposite of my colorful wood duck painting. I picked the dullest looking angle and sex for a hummingbird to paint, a female Black-chinned hummingbird showing the underside (Archilochus alexandri). The plain look is for survival when nesting. Since they stay at one spot for an extended time it's better to blend than to be picked off by a predator.
The reason I painted this particular bird was that she successfully reared two chicks in my backyard. This year I had total of 8 chicks raised in 4 nests. When I see this painting, it'll remind me of her nesting at my house in Roseville, California. Painting was done in watercolor.
