Description
When I visit the dog park at the Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin, CA, I see a lot of critters in the oak grassland of the park. But nothing drives the dogs more crazy than when a squirrel gets close enough to tease the dogs in the dog park, especially my dog, Mochi. I can just say the word squirrel and she switches to the hunting mode, not that we actually hunt.
The two most common species of squirrels in our area is the native Western Gray Squirrel and the introduced Eastern Fox Squirrel. The Fox Squirrel is native to Eastern United States and sometime in the past, a few were brought out here and released. Many city and regional parks have Fox Squirrels but the Gray Squirrel is more reclusive and less seen in park and prefers safer areas away from man.
The squirrel in this painting is up an oak tree within the fenced area of the dog park. I like the way the red orange fur contrasted with the blue sky. This painting was done in transparent watercolor.
