Description
Every year I have a couple of hummingbirds nesting in my backyard in Roseville, California and I mentioned this to Leonard James. Leonard is a wildlife photographer and he was interested in photographing my hummingbirds. He brought his equipment to my backyard on multiple days in variable weather to get the perfect shot of a hummingbird feeding her chicks. The feeding only happens for a few seconds every hour or two. I watched Leonard patiently wait for the split second shot as the wind was blowing the nest in and out of the shot or dark clouds would block the sun light. There never seemed to be perfect conditions. At the very end of 4 or 5 visits he finally got his good shot. Patience should be his middle name. That photo was entered in the California State Fair and he won an award. Leonard will probably show that photo when he participates in the Placer Arts Studio Tour in November.
While watching Leonard shoot, I thought it was hilarious that camera was so huge in comparison to a hummingbird. So I took a photo of Leonard and created a painting. I made up the background and threw in a hummingbird to the left. The fictional bird is not the Black Chinned species he was actually photographing but it does give you a size reference to the camera. Leonard didn’t know I painted him and one day at the Arts Council of Placer Arts office he looked up on the wall and saw a painting of himself.
This 15” X 22” watercolor painting was done on Arches, 140 lb, rough paper.
