Description
This is my watercolor of a ground squirrel. On a Yolo Ag-Art event at Capay Organic Farms last year, I spotted a ground squirrel on some rocks next to a dirt road which ran along Cache Creek. I got the photo reference shot before the squirrel ducked down into the stones. I liked the look of the lichens on the rocks.
The California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi), also known as the Beechey ground squirrel, is a common and easily observed ground squirrel. As is typical for ground squirrels, California ground squirrels live in burrows which they excavate themselves. They spend most of their time within 80 ft of their burrow, and rarely go further than 160 ft from it.
This 15” X 22” watercolor was done on Arches, 140 lb, rough paper.
