Description
The Athens Plein Air group was invited to the Clifton residence in Winterville, Georgia, to paint the fall foliage. I was told that the trees had already lost some of their color. To restore the scene I added some extra color with my painting. It was quite a challenge to paint the autumn foliage in watercolor. The potential problem is that the colors can get muddy and dark if you’re not careful with the application. Near the end of the painting, I decided to hit the sky with gouache instead of watercolor. That way I could punch in some “sky holes” in the trees.
I’m still relatively new to Georgia and don’t know the trees like I did in California. There are about 250 trees native to Georgia. Georgia is divided into the three basic habitat zones and the zone I live in is the Piedmont. The word piedmont comes from the Italian words pied and monte, which mean “foot” and “hill.” The Georgia Piedmont Region is a plateau which lies between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Upper Coastal Plains. Piedmont plants typically include a variety of hardwood species such as white oak, black oak, southern red oak, pignut hickory, shagbark hickory, mockernut hickory, red maple, blackgum, shortleaf pine, and loblolly pine, with dogwood, species of virburnum, wild plum, dwarf pawpaw, and various Hawthorne species in the understory.
This 11” X 15” watercolor and gouache painting was done on Arches, 140 lb., rough paper.
