Description
His name is Lola, he is a store cat. With orange and whitish colored hair and garden pots here and there. You can see Lola at Outdoor Specialty Nursery in Watkinsville, Georgia. I was on a plein air outing at the garden shop and arrived early to be greeted by Lola monitoring the front door. Lola is bold, friendly, and full of charm. Paula Lansford was one of the artists attending and she had previously worked at Outdoor Specialty. Paula wrote and illustrated a children’s paperback book titled “Lola the Garden Center Cat” (2021). She explained when the Outdoor Specialty owner rescued the kitty, he named the cat, Lola. He found out much later that Lola was a boy cat but too late, the name still stuck. Since Lola was a famous cat, I had to paint him.
Lola was a song written by the Kinks in 1970. Some of the lyrics seem apt for Lola the cat. “Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man, but I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man. And so is Lola, Lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola”
This 15” X 11” watercolor was done on Baohong Master’s Choice, 140 lb., cold press paper.
