Artist's Description

In February of 2020 before Covid 19, Yolo Art-Ag held a plein air event at Capay Organic Farms near Capay, California. This farm was started by Kathy Barsotti and Martin Barnes in 1976. The second generation continues to operate the farm to this day with the addition of the “Farm Fresh To You” concept. Organic produce is picked at the farm and delivered fresh to your doorstep.

This farm scene was next to where we parked our cars. Behind the structure were more tractors and other farm equipment. Being from the city, I know next to nothing about tractors. Out of curiosity I looked up the prices. On the low end a tractor is around $9,000 and in the 25 horsepower range. A typical commercial sized tractor is 100 horsepower and can be in the $75,000 price level. At the extreme high end of power is 150 horsepower and up $120,000 or more. You also need to figure in the cost of the attachment the tractor is going to pull, which runs about $3,000.

My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
