This is my watercolor painting of Main Street in Newcastle, California. A small town with a population of roughly 1,300 people and with a post office that opened in 1864. The overhead power lines and wires caught my attention as well as the architecture in this hilly downtown area. The power lines seem to go in random directions every which way. A few lines go the building lurking in the shadows which is the Newcastle Pizzeria with hand made wood fired pizza.
In California due to power line caused wildfires, deaths, and recent lawsuits, if the wind is strong and the fire conditions are bad, they shut down electric power to the region. Sometimes those power-outs last for multiple days. One possible answer to the problem is to put most of the power lines underground but that change is very costly. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
