Artist's Description

This painting was an experiment with black watercolor paper. Most watercolor paints are transparent so they tend to disappear on black paper. However some paints are opaque or semi-opaque which are more visible on the black surface. This was not intended to be an actual painting but it ended being one. The reference photo was taken in the day light and I made up a night scene to take advantage of the black paper.

Built in 1938, the Tower Theatre is a Sacramento landmark. In the 1980s, the single screen auditorium was divided into three smaller ones. The exterior, however, has remained in its original form, including still-working multi-colored neon lights.

When I was little boy, my older teenage sister took me to Tower Drugs, located next to the Tower theater. In a section of the drug store they sold vinyl records. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
