Description
This painting was an experiment with black watercolor paper. Most watercolor paints are transparent so they tend to disappear on black paper. However some paints are opaque or semi-opaque which are more visible on the black surface. This was not intended to be an actual painting but it ended being one. The reference photo was taken in the day light and I made up a night scene to take advantage of the black paper.
Built in 1938, the Tower Theatre is a Sacramento landmark. In the 1980s, the single screen auditorium was divided into three smaller ones. The exterior, however, has remained in its original form, including still-working multi-colored neon lights.
When I was little boy, my older teenage sister took me to Tower Drugs, located next to the Tower theater. In a section of the drug store they sold vinyl records. She went to pick up a 45 done by the hot musician at the time, Elvis Presley. This is the same Tower Drugs, which became the former retail giant, Tower Records, many years later.
This 10” X 14” watercolor painting was done on Legion Stonehenge Aqua Black, 140 lb paper.
