Description
In October 2020, we visited Hope Valley to take photos of the famous fall foliage. The deciduous trees will have bright yellow, orange, and red colors contrasting against the blue green evergreen trees. This spot is west of Wylder Hotel which used to be Sorenson’s. Photographers flock to Hope Valley faithfully this time of year like the swallows of Capistrano. A little hike off the beaten path and up a hill between the highway and the West Fork of the Carson River we were rewarded with this view looking northwest.
In the distance, you can see the far off mountains which were overtaken by the Caldor Fire in 2021. The fire scorched more than 346 square miles (896 square kilometers) of the Sierra Nevada. The fire was first reported Aug. 14 and destroyed 1,003 structures including more than 770 homes as it marched toward the tourist destination community of South Lake Tahoe, which was spared. Many of the homes that were destroyed were in the small rustic forest community of Grizzly Flat. The fire burned for two months and as of October 21, 2021, it is officially declared contained.
This 11” X 15” watercolor was done on Arches, 300 lb, rough paper.
