Description
This is my watercolor painting of Jack, a mini donkey at the Little Bear Tree Farm in Alta, California. The tree farm is open to the public from November 23rd to December 22nd but we were fortunate to get to see it off season thanks to the Parrish family. Besides the 50 acres of mostly silver tip and white fir forest, they have trout spawning in a creek, a few Highland cows and two mini donkeys. Miniature Donkeys are native to the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Bred to be small, tough, docile, and trainable, they were used pull carts. The native Miniature Donkeys are no longer used for these purposes and are almost extinct in their lands of origin. They were first introduced to this country in 1929. Mature weight is between 225 and 350 pounds and the mature height is 36" and under. Today there are over 52,000 registered in the United States.
The intelligence of the miniature donkey is superior to all other farm animals. They are not so flight oriented that they will hurt themselves or others when startled as is the case with other equine. They are by nature affectionate, comical, and people loving. They truly care for his or her family and are like the family dog. The average life span is 25 to 35 years but with good nutrition and proper care they have been known to live longer.
This 15” X 22” watercolor was done on Arches, 140 lb, rough paper.
