The correct title is Alego's Barn, apostrophe's are not allowed in the title on this site. This is my watercolor painting of Algeo’s Barn on Pacific Avenue in Pleasant Grove, California. Ed Sills, the owner of Pleasant Grove Organic Farms was showing us his field of red kidney beans near the barn. The old collapsing barn and broken windmill caught my attention even though there were several structures in better condition, including a larger functional barn on this site. The Algeo family descendants still own the property and are connected with the early history of Pleasant Grove.
In 1861 I.S. Ingraham put up a blacksmith shop about one mile south of the site where Pleasant Grove was later built. The little village was first known as Gouge Eye. When the post office was established in 1867 the town was given the name Pleasant Grove Creek, but in 1875 the name was shortened to the present name Pleasant Grove. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
