Artist's Description

This is my watercolor painting of turkeys in a section of Dry Creek, which is located in Roseville, California. On a group hike led by Sky Nelder, I saw these turkeys from the trail. The Miners Ravine Trail winds its way through the city of Roseville, following the course of Miners Ravine and Dry Creek through a wooded greenway and among suburban neighborhoods and business districts, including Downtown Roseville. There are many points along the way to take in the wildlife, scenery and seasonal blooms. Turkeys are common in Roseville, I see them every morning when I walk my dog pass an oak-grassland area.

Turkeys can see movement almost 100 yards away. Wild turkeys have very good eyesight, but their vision is very poor at night. They will not see a predator until it is too late. At twilight most turkeys will head for the trees and roost well off the ground, up to 16 meters: it is safer to sleep there in numbers than to risk being victim to predators who hunt by night

My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
