Artist's Description

This is my plein air watercolor painting of the granite building erected in 1878, located at 2205 Rippey Rd, in Penryn, California. The large sign near the top of front of building reads: “1878 G. Griffith Penryn." The building currently houses the Post Office, Penryn Library and MasonicTemple. On the back wall of the U.S. Post Office building a sign reads: “Penryhn Gold Hill Lodge #32 F&AM”

The story of Penryn begins in late 1864 when a Welsh immigrant by the name of Griffith Griffith established a granite quarry on quarter section of land leased from the Central Pacific Railroad. Back home in North Wales, G. G., like his father before him, worked in the Penrhyn Slate Quarry. In Welsh, the word penrhyn translates to headland or promontory, which aptly described the seaport from which the Penrhyn Quarry took its name. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
