Description
This is my plein air watercolor painting of the granite building erected in 1878, located at 2205 Rippey Rd, in Penryn, California. The large sign near the top of front of building reads: “1878 G. Griffith Penryn." The building currently houses the Post Office, Penryn Library and MasonicTemple. On the back wall of the U.S. Post Office building a sign reads: “Penryhn Gold Hill Lodge #32 F&AM”
The story of Penryn begins in late 1864 when a Welsh immigrant by the name of Griffith Griffith established a granite quarry on quarter section of land leased from the Central Pacific Railroad. Back home in North Wales, G. G., like his father before him, worked in the Penrhyn Slate Quarry. In Welsh, the word penrhyn translates to headland or promontory, which aptly described the seaport from which the Penrhyn Quarry took its name. In May 1871, Penryn was designated a voting precinct by the County of Placer. The most official recognition of all came in June 1873 with the establishment of a U. S. Post Office for Penryn.
This 15” X 22” watercolor painting was done on Blick, 140 lb, cold press paper.
