Artist's Description

I created this imagined colorful view looking across the American River just east of the Fair Oaks Bridge. The entrance to the park was posted as the Sunrise Recreation Area – American River Parkway which is what I used for the title. The park is administered by the County of Sacramento. The nearby historic Fair Oaks Bridge was built from 1908-1909 and is currently only for pedestrian and bike traffic. The bridge is also good for getting this view of the bluff on the north bank. After doing the research months later, I realized I should have titled this painting Fair Oaks Bluff.

From the Fair Oaks Historical Society site: The Fair Oaks Bluff at the American River has been called “The Crown Jewel of the American River Parkway” and offers perhaps the most spectacular vista in all of Sacramento County. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
