The Lincoln plein air group went to a cattle ranch off of Garden Bar Road in the Lincoln Area in Placer County, California but it is close to the border of Nevada County, California. This is a large ranch with three ponds and a canal running through it. A lot of farmland in the Sierra Foothills receive their water through a system of canals. This canal is called the Valley View Canal and is managed by the Nevada County Irrigation District. I found a bit of information about the canal from one of their reports. The design flow is approximately 35 cubic feet per second, and current peak flow at BR 323, Valley View at head is 11.4 cubic feet per second.

I thought Valley View was just a scenic name they picked for the canal but there might be a historical reason for the name. Valley View was the name of a hamlet in 1867 with 30 houses in Nevada County. The hamlet was in the area of what is Grass Valley today.
