On a cloudy afternoon in early March, our plein air group decided to drive up Highway 193 (Lincoln-Newcastle Highway) in the Newcastle area in California to pick a spot along the road to paint from. Jim Brunk leads the group and he stops near an orchard area. As we are walking along shoulder of the road trying to figure out something to paint, it starts to drizzle. Many of the painters get in their cars and either paint from the open hatchback or from inside looking out a window. I took a bunch of photos instead because rain and outdoor watercolor painting without an umbrella is not a good combination.
When I got home, I saw that the reference photos were not great. I modified reality by thinning out some vegetation, moving some rocks, and came up with something a bit more colorful. I had to look on the map to figure out where the hill was, which turns out to be part of Twin Peaks Orchard.
