Description
On a cloudy afternoon in early March, our plein air group decided to drive up Highway 193 (Lincoln-Newcastle Highway) in the Newcastle area in California to pick a spot along the road to paint from. Jim Brunk leads the group and he stops near an orchard area. As we are walking along shoulder of the road trying to figure out something to paint, it starts to drizzle. Many of the painters get in their cars and either paint from the open hatchback or from inside looking out a window. I took a bunch of photos instead because rain and outdoor watercolor painting without an umbrella is not a good combination.
When I got home, I saw that the reference photos were not great. I modified reality by thinning out some vegetation, moving some rocks, and came up with something a bit more colorful. I had to look on the map to figure out where the hill was, which turns out to be part of Twin Peaks Orchard.
Here is some information I discovered about Twin Peaks Orchard on their website: The foothills area of Newcastle, California, has been known as the fruit basket of the world since produce began to be shipped east by ice train in the late 1800's. The vineyard quality soil, the rolling hills of Newcastle, California, and hot days with cool nights create fruit that is not only rich in sugar, but full of flavor. Peaches, plums, nectarines, persimmons, oriental pears are grown here. Twin Peaks Orchard was established in 1912.
This 15” X 22” watercolor painting was done on Daler Rowney Langdon Prestige, 140 lb, cold press paper.
