On a wintry, windy, cloudy, damp, and cold day we had a plein air trip to Sheridan, California. It was cold enough that I just sketched instead of painting because I didn’t think the watercolor would dry. That lasted for a bit till my fingers got numb. I completed the watercolor painting at home. Most of the focus of the painting group was on the vacant grocery store next to the post office. I’m sure back in the day it was probably the main hub of the little town. There’s not much to Sheridan which is a town in Placer County, California with a population of 1,337. It’s the kind of town that you catch in the corner of your eye for a split second while driving to Marysville or Yuba City.

My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
