I visited the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area near Granite Bay at the end of Douglas Boulevard. While eating lunch on a picnic table I was looking toward the south at a trail and I thought, that would make an interesting painting.
Granite Bay Beach is located within the grounds of Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, just 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Sacramento. The water level at Folsom Lake dictates the type of recreation and length of the season. During years with normal precipitation the main recreational season is May through Labor Day in September. During the remaining months of the year use of Folsom Lake drops considerably. The desired reservoir elevation for recreation is approximately 435' to 455'. Above 455' less beach is available for swimmers and sunbathers, and below 435' feet the waterline is too great a distance from parking areas. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
