Artist's Description
I saw these palm trees on a vacation trip to the Mojave desert near Palm Spring back in July 1994. From a photo of the trees I had sketched out this drawing and it basically was untouched for two decades. The photo looked so complex I was wondering how I was going to paint it. I started dabbling ink on the sketch in between my work with other paintings. Eventually I got this quarter sheet (11 x 15) done in January of 2017... 23 years later. It was more of an experiment with ink and watercolor than my usual painting projects.

My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
