Artist's Description

There's a story to this watercolor and ink painting. I planned to sketch my Bengal cat, Charli, in duplicate with ink and watercolor. Then I was going to tear the painting in half and give one half as present for an art league holiday dinner party (white elephant) and keep the other for myself. I rapidly drew and painted the two cats simultaneously. I was amazed how much they look the same yet there are many tiny nuances between the two cats. It seemed to me if one looked at the painting they would find and compare those differences instinctively. After realizing that the two cats together were more significant then I couldn't rip the painting in half and decided to keep it whole. For the gift, I ended up giving a framed print of one cat instead.

I sketched the cats with ink in a rapidograph pen. Then I painted the cats with watercolor going back and forth between the two. Sometimes I used slightly different brush or paint with a each cat. That's why I was surprise...

My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
