The Lincoln Plein Air group was invited to paint at the Jensen Ranch in Wheatland, California. When I arrived that morning, I saw Jill Jensen walking down the long driveway to the mail box. I thought the scene would make a good painting. The Sierra Foothills are in the distance to the east. The ranch has cattle but they also have a few goats, a horse, two cats, chickens, and a barn owl for their barn. I’ve painted about a half dozen paintings on this ranch. It was nice that the Jensens gave us access to their property for painting. Jill is an oil painter and also participates in the Lincoln plein air outings.
At the time of Wheatland’s incorporation in 1874, the population was 900, of which 300 were Chinese. Most Chinese came to work on the railroad and service industries (laundries, restaurants, etc.) and later were employed as hop workers. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
