In August 2016, I took a day trip to Tahoe. It was a rainy day with scattered showers and yet there thin spots in the clouds that allowed some sun to light up this view of Crystal Bay on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Crystal Bay is in Washoe County, Nevada on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.
This is the third of four paintings that resulted from the trip and they fulfilled my quota of paintings for 2016. My plan was 44 paintings in 44 weeks. Even though all four Lake Tahoe paintings were in the same area and the same time, they look very different.
This painting was done in transparent watercolor.
My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
