About the only two Greenlandic words you will ever know are kayak and igloo. 4,000 years ago the first kayaks were constructed from stitched animal skins stretched over a wood or whalebone-skeleton frame. A kayak is a small, narrow watercraft which is typically propelled by means of a double-bladed paddle. Traditional kayaks have a hard hull and you sit inside to paddle. Many innovative alternatives have sprung up over the years, including: Sit-on-top, inflatable, folding, tandem, and others. Moving hands-free on the water is great for when you also want to take photos, watch for birds or fish like these two kayakers and geese on the American River below the Rainbow Bridge, in Folsom, California.

My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
