“No Lifeguard On Duty” is posted on lifeguard station #11 at the Nimbus Flat State Recreation Area in Gold River, California. On the far side from the lifeguard station, across Lake Natoma is Fair Oaks and one mile to the east is Folsom. Rocklin Fine Arts had a sketch outing to this state park and I saw the lifeguard station #11 with dappled morning sun light coming the trees. The nearby Sacramento Aquatic Center has many boating and kayaking classes and the park attracts swimmers and fisherman. As the weather warms up and the pandemic lessens, Nimbus Flat will be a busy place.
The use of lifeguards on beaches in California began in the late 1930’s. To be a State Park Lifeguard you must pass an open water swimming test which is either ocean or lakes. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
