Artist's Description

I saw this woodpecker in Paul Harman’s picturesque garden in North Auburn, California. Paul is an award winning pastel artist that generously invited the Rocklin Fine Arts group to sketch and paint his blooming spring flowers. Besides the garden, he has also created a bird sanctuary of sorts with many bird feeding stations. Instead of the daffodils, lovely garden, and a huge flock of eagerly feeding finches, I painted this woodpecker.

Paul has different types of bird feeders for different diets and for the woodpeckers he feeds them suet. I had to look up what suet was. Suet is the raw, hard fat of beef or mutton found around the loins and kidneys that has been rendered to form hard cakes, balls, or other shapes. I would have never thought of feeding fat to birds. Suet is a great food to offer birds when they need more calories to maintain their body heat and energy levels, especially during the cold winter and early spring. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
