Description
I saw this woodpecker in Paul Harman’s picturesque garden in North Auburn, California. Paul is an award winning pastel artist that generously invited the Rocklin Fine Arts group to sketch and paint his blooming spring flowers. Besides the garden, he has also created a bird sanctuary of sorts with many bird feeding stations. Instead of the daffodils, lovely garden, and a huge flock of eagerly feeding finches, I painted this woodpecker.
Paul has different types of bird feeders for different diets and for the woodpeckers he feeds them suet. I had to look up what suet was. Suet is the raw, hard fat of beef or mutton found around the loins and kidneys that has been rendered to form hard cakes, balls, or other shapes. I would have never thought of feeding fat to birds. Suet is a great food to offer birds when they need more calories to maintain their body heat and energy levels, especially during the cold winter and early spring. The suet must work because he has a pair of happy Woodpeckers hanging around his fantastic garden.
This 11” X 15” watercolor was painted on Arches, 300 lb, rough paper.
