Despite the pandemic, Placerville, California, is bustling with tourists on the weekends. What’s different about this 2021 late winter view down Main Street are the new tents taking up parking spaces. The tents allow outdoor dining when the ever-changing COVID-19 rules permit it and they are necessary for the restaurants to survive when indoor dining is banned. Some businesses have closed permanently but left their tents up. Creating a new problem which the Placerville City leaders have addressed this March by passing a new rule. If you haven’t used the tent for a week, you have to take it down, except if the businesses are temporarily closed for COVID-19 quarantines.
The old bell tower is the iconic symbol for Hang Town that was here long before COVID-19 and will be around after the tents will eventually disappear in the non-COVID future. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
