That’s what it was like on our visit to the Rominger Farms near Arbuckle, arranged by Yolo Art-Ag. “One of the benefits of this job is enjoying the blossoms,” says 6th generation farmer Scott Rominger. Their farm grows and processes almonds for Blue Diamond. The Rominger family has been farming in California since 1870. Today, California’s Central Valley leads the world in global almond production.
Spaced along the dirt road for the orchard were numerous white boxes which are bee hives. The bees are essential to pollenate the blossoms to produce the almonds. There were countless blossoms and I would imagine those bees had a lot of work to do. You know, busy as a bee. What was surprising to me is that there is such a thing as bee rustling. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman.
