Description
A prominent block long, two story brick building is hard to miss in the small downtown area of Lincoln, California. Although the exterior looks historic, beneath this shell is a totally rebuilt modern interior with many shops and eateries. I saw this big long red rectangle structure, devoid of significant external architectural features as an art challenge. How can I paint it and make it look interesting and not like a big red shoebox. In this center section, the signage, different colored shutters and gates, and awnings helped create interest in the otherwise plain brick wall. The Rebel Hen Café has an interesting logo with what looks like a hen clucking (shown by lightning bolts).
I could not find historic information on Lincoln Brand Feeds till I discovered that they real name of the building is the Butterfield Building. Lincoln’s founder Charles Wilson, had a wooden frame building here in the early 1860’s. His brother-in-law, Henry Rood, operated the building as “Rood Hall”. By 1870 Stephen and Melissa Burdge ran a boarding house in the building, known as the Burdge Hotel. It burned down in the big fire of 1883. Gladding, McBean & co. then built a brick store building here and kept it until 1887. C.H. Butterfield bought it and operated a store here until his death in 1891. In the first half of the 20th century the chain store Rochdale Store was here from 1903-1905. Walter Jansen had the space for awhile as did Lincoln Frozen locker Co. and then the Red & White Store #2. Currently the building has been restored as Lincoln Brand Feeds. The historic marker on the building was placed by The Silver Star Parlor No.63, Native Sons of the Golden West
This 12” X 16” watercolor painting was done on Fluid 100, 140 lb, cold press paper.
