Artist's Description

My watercolor painting of the Folsom Ice Rink in the early evening on Christmas Eve. The challenge for me was to capture the complex lighting and shadows for a night scene in watercolor. This temporary outdoor ice rink is built on a reconstruction of an 1856 train turntable in Folsom’s historic district. In the center of the turntable is the big tree for the historic district and a lighting ceremony is held on December 1st for the community. Nearby is a convenient multi-story parking garage which you can see in the painting with the clock towers. The skaters looked like they were having fun. For those that are learning to skate or are unsure of their balance they have a big red sliding box that you can push around to keep steady. Nearby are the Folsom Historic District restaurants. The ice rink is closed and removal begins in late January.

This 15” X 22” watercolor was done on Arches, 140 lb, rough paper.

This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint. As a fan of Van Gogh, and knowing that he painted images from his day to day life: houses, fields, people working, I decided to do the...
