Artist's Description

This is my watercolor painting of a tunnel in the small town of Newcastle, California. On an outing last year in Newcastle, I was looking for something different to paint other than the usual Packing Shed and Town Square area. I decided the vehicle tunnel with the railroad tracks on top was non-typical art subject but yet it is a key landmark in the area to residents.

The Newcastle Tunnel was built in 1930 to replace the existing narrow, dangerously curvy, hilly route through town. To build the 531’ tunnel, workers had to cut through nearly solid rock, a great engineering feat of the day. The tunnel was finished in 1932. It helped shorten the route through town and reduced the grade by 74-feet. The Newcastle Tunnel was part of old Highway 40 until the 1960’s when Interstate 80 freeway was developed nearby. Old Highway 40 is known today as Taylor Road.

This 12” x 16” watercolor was done on Fluid 100, 140 lb, cold press paper.

This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint. As a fan of Van Gogh, and knowing that he painted images from his day to day life: houses, fields, people working, I decided to do the...
