Artist's Description

My watercolor painting of the Veterans Memorial Hall at 110 Park Dr, Roseville, California fit the theme of Fade for the 60 Day/60 Theme Isolation Art Challenge. General Douglas MacArthur in his April 19, 1951 farewell address to the U.S. Congress said “... but I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that "old soldiers never die; they just fade away." It was that quote which made me connect fade with the Veteran Memorial Hall as a subject to paint. The song itself is a British Army's parody of the gospel song Kind Thoughts Can Never Die.

The original portion of the building was built in 1929. It was expanded in 1949 to its current configuration, more than doubling its size. The building is located at the north end of Royer Park. The original Icehouse Railroad Bridge has been relocated near the building to provide convenient access to public parking. It is the location for the Roseville Veterans of...

My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
